Boomer News Stories

While Boomer today is unlikely to make the news, there have been a few times over the years when it has popped up in headlines. The Newport Plain Talk has been the primary source for these stories, though a handful have appeared in other papers as well. Below are some snippets from newspapers that mention Boomer. While most of these are fairly random and uneventful on their own, together they help paint a picture of the Boomer community and its largely forgotten history.

Newport Plain Talk: 1912-1922

Some of the items included in this are just mere mentions of Boomer, while some mention the school in Boomer or talk of a local politician coming to Boomer.

Knoxville News Sentinel/ Knoxville Journal: 1954

These two articles are about a murder that occurred in Boomer in 1954.

The Salisbury Post: 1959

While Boomer is mentioned in this article very briefly (It goes by Boomer Den in this article), the article details the journey of the Salvation Army into the area around Boomer during Christmas.

Ashville Citizen Times: 1960

One of the most interesting articles I have been able to find, this article talks about a blizzard that hit the TN/NC border in 1960 that was so bad that the National Guard was deployed to airlift supplies to people and some of those people were in Boomer.
